Champion Bulldogs: Inland Lakes Captures 1st State Title
EAST LANSING – Inland Lakes’ journey to the MHSAA Division 4 state final has come full circle.
Behind a 12-strikeout performance from senior ace Cloe Mallory, the top-ranked Bulldogs fulfilled their dreams on Saturday with an 8-0 win over Ottawa Lake Whiteford to claim their first state championship.
The title is only the school’s second state championship, as softball program joins the 1979 girls track and field team as state champions. It marked the second straight title game appearance for Inland Lakes.
Scoreless through 2 1/2 innings, Inland Lakes plated a trio of runs in the bottom of the third. The Bulldogs would add another insurance run in the fifth and put the game on ice in the sixth with a four-run inning.
Sydney DePauw led the way at the plate, going 3-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored while Precious Delos Santos was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Pamela Braund also went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Mallory was nearly unhittable in the circle, as the future Central Michigan pitcher allowed just one hit and walked five while fanning 12 in seven innings of work.
The Bulldogs graduate four seniors and are set to return eight players next spring.
Inland Lakes concludes its year at 35-5.
