Charlevoix Outlasts Big Rapids in Regional Semis

CLARE – The Charlevoix girls soccer team punched its ticket to a Division 3 regional final with a 3-2 shootout win over Big Rapids at Clare on Tuesday.

The Rayders held a 1-0 lead at the half, but were tied at 1-1 following regulation.

Charlevoix (15-7-1) would take a 2-1 lead to the second overtime.

“I was really nervous and the whole game was nerve-wracking,” Charlevoix senior Ali Jarema said. “It was back and forth the whole time. We went in with confidence and put them away.”

Winners of the Central State Activities Association, Big Rapids concludes its year at 18-6. The Cardinals had reached Tuesday’s regional semifinal after posting wins over Montague (9-1), Whitehall (1-0) and Shelby (7-1) in district play.

Charlevoix will now face No. 3 Freeland for the regional title at Clare on Friday.

“I’m really excited,” Charlevoix senior Beth Veenstra said. “I want to put the regional trophy in our school and show off to the boys that we can do good too, because they went to states.”
