EAST LANSING – The 10th-ranked Gaylord St. Mary baseball team ended its season in the MHSAA Division 4 state semifinals on Friday.
Appearing in its second straight semifinal, the Snowbirds could not overcome a three-run sixth inning by Hudson, falling 6-4 at Michigan State.
Trailing 6-2 in the top of the seventh, Snowbirds chased starter Jesse Heistan, tagging the sophomore for a pair of runs before he gave way to Garrett Gamble. Heistan allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits while striking out five.
Joseph Moeggenberg led the Snowbirds at the plate, going 3-for-3 with an RBI.
Nick Torsky took the loss for St. Mary, allowing six earned runs on 10 hits while striking out four and walking six.
Gamble was a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs driven in for the Tigers.
Hudson (27-16) will now face Portland St. Patrick in Saturday’s state title game. The top-ranked Shamrocks (28-0) pushed four runs across the plate in the top of the seventh to break an 8-8 tie in the earlier semifinal against Unionville-Sebewaing Area.
