Houghton Lakes Tops McBain NMC for District Title

MCBAIN – The Houghton Lake girls soccer team captured a Division 4 district championship with a 3-0 win over tournament host McBain Northern Michigan Christian on Friday.

The victory marked Houghton Lake’s second district title.

"We had a pretty lofty set of goals, and this was one of them, so check that off, and hopefully we can make some more happen,” Houghton Lake coach Darren Barnes said.

The Bobcats (17-3) led 2-0 after the opening half on goals from Sarah Barnes and Alexis Souder. Souder tallied her second goal in the final minutes of regulation.

"This is my first district championship,” Houghton Lake senior Madisen Forman said. “It’s really exciting. It was honestly a really tough game. They played really well against us."

The win was Houghton Lake’s third over McBain NMC this season. The Bobcats won the previous meetings 4-2 (OT) and 4-0, respectively.

Houghton Lake will now face either Elk Rapids or Glen Lake in a regional semifinal at Big Rapids Crossroads on Tuesday.
