TC Central Boys Forfeit 2017 Regional Title

TRAVERSE CITY – The Traverse City Central boys track and field program will forfeit its 2017 MHSAA Division 1 regional championship due to the participation of an ineligible student-athlete, the school announced Thursday.

The Traverse City Area Public Schools reported the issue to the MHSAA after becoming aware of the situation this month. Although the athlete, an international student, did not score in the regional meet, the participation of the athlete is a violation of MHSAA rules. The MHSAA guidelines state, “Accidental, intentional or other use of ineligible players by a junior high/middle school or senior high school shall require that team victories are forfeited to opponents…”

Student-athletes who were awarded medals for individual events will be allowed to keep those, and their achievements will be honored.

“It is regrettable that an oversight by adults impacted students,” said TCAPS Associate Superintendent, Chris Parker, in a statement. “Procedures are in place to ensure future transfer, international students, and other students that may not meet MHSAA eligibility requirements do not participate in events that are not allowable. I have full faith that this type of error will not occur again.”

Central must also forfeit all cross country races and track and field meets that were won by the team, as the ineligible student participated in both sports.
