Two Former Bulldogs Sign With ECHL Team
BIG RAPIDS – Two former Ferris State hockey defensemen will return for another season playing professional hockey.
Jason Binkley, who completed his collegiate career with the Bulldogs in 2015, will continue his career with the Fort Wayne Komets in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). Last season, Binkley appeared in 67 games and had seven goals and 44 points. The 2017-2018 season will be his third full pro season in the ECHL. Binkley started his ECHL career with the South Carolina Stingrays back in 2015.
The Powell, Ohio, native finished with 68 career points for the Bulldogs during his collegiate career, consisting of eight goals and 60 assists. Binkley appeared in 156 collegiate games and was a part of two conference title teams, two NCAA tournament births, and a national title game appearance in 2012.
Ryan Lowney, another former Bulldog, will also join the Komets again this upcoming season. Last year he joined the Komets for the last 14 games of the season and the playoffs where he tallied 14 points. The Redford, Mich., native wrapped up his career at Ferris last year after playing in 158 games in four years and racking up 58 points on seven goals and 51 assists in his time as a Bulldog.
The former Bulldogs are two of the first three signings for the Komets this offseason.
"All three players announced today will be important contributing players for the Komets next season," Komet general manager David Franke said. "Jason Binkley and Ryan Lowney will be important defensemen who we will look to for offense from the blue line, five-on-five and on the power play. Mason Baptista has the potential to score 20-plus goals in this league with regular ice time. It’s a good start to the Komets’ recruiting season."
Opening night for the Fort Wayne Komets’ 2017-2018 season will take place October 14 at 7:30 p.m. vs. the Toledo Walleye.
