70th AuSable River Canoe Marathon Begins Saturday Night In Grayling

With the banks lined by thousands of fans, the 70th AuSable River Canoe Marathon started Saturday night in Grayling.

The first team to the water was Christophe Proulx and Samuel Frigon.

The pair was followed closely by the time trial winners, Steve Lajoie and Guillaume Blais.

The Lajoie-Blais team was the first to make it to Burton’s Landing in 41 minutes and 53 seconds.

Next to the first stop was the first in the water, the Proulx-Frigon duo, clocking in at 42 minutes and six seconds.

All 80 teams then headed to Stephan Bridge, but for many, the race to the river is the most exciting part.

“This is my favorite part. I mean there’s thousands of people here, and in Grayling specifically, canoe racing is not just a sport, it’s part of the fabric of the community,” said Heather Tait, AuSable Canoe Marathon Co-Chairperson.

Northern Michigan’s Sports Leader will have a crew at the finish line in Oscoda Sunday morning. The first team should arrive just before noon.
