CMU’s Ostman, Willis Named to Award Watch Lists

MT. PLEASANT – St. Ignace native and Central Michigan senior defensive end Joe Ostman has been named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List.

A 2016 All-Mid-American Conference Second Team honoree, Ostman led the Chippewas in sack with nine, ranking 34th nationally. He concluded his 2016 campaign with 69 tackles, 13 1/3 tackles for loss, two fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Named in honor of 1996 Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel of Florida, the award is voted on by a national committee of media, college football notables, former winners and former coaches.

The winner will be announced Dec. 5.

Fellow senior and wide receiver Corey Willis has been named to the Biletnikoff Award Preseason Watch List.

Willis finished fifth in the MAC in 2016 with 72 receptions and was fourth in total yardage with 1,087 yards. The All-MAC Second Team honoree caught nine touchdown passes.

Named in honor of college football and pro football halls of fame inductee, Fred Biletnikoff, the award is presented annually to the most outstanding receiver in college football.

The winner will be announced Dec. 7.

CMU opens its 2017 season on Thursday, Aug. 31, hosting Rhode Island at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
