Gaylord’s Brandenburg Set to Make MMA Pro Debut in Japan

GAYLORD – Gaylord’s Sheena Brandenburg is packing her bags for the biggest trip of her life.

An amateur mixed martial artist, Brandenburg, who fights under the name “Sheena Starr,” is set to make her professional debut on Sunday for Japan’s RIZIN Fighting Federation’s World Grand Prix 2017 Opening Round. She’ll take on Shinju Nozawa-Auclair in a bantamweight bout.

With a lengthy amateur résumé, Brandenburg’s biggest fight came in 2011, when she won her battle against thyroid cancer.

Despite undergoing chemotherapy and radiation, Brandenburg still found the courage and ability to train for the grueling sport.

“I like to be a little inspiring,” Brandenburg said. “I’ve gone through a lot of hardships whether it was my health or any sort of personal struggles, and I was able to overcome those. If anything, I wish to be a positive example.”

Brandenburg has been training Monday through Friday at Fuse MMA in downstate Clinton Township.

Sunday’s fight is available on the pay-per-view site
