Big Rapids Looks to Rebound in 2017

BIG RAPIDS – As the Big Rapids football program opened practice earlier this week, the Cardinals are placing more of an emphasis on the weight room and getting stronger for the 2017 season.

After starting out 2016 with three consecutive losses, the Cardinals rebounded for straight wins, before dropping their final three games to playoff-bound teams Reed City, Chippewa Hills and Alma.

“For us, the big focus was getting stronger in the weight room, you know we have pretty good athletes but we’re pretty much out-sized every game and so that is to improve our strength, and to really work on toughness up front,” coach Mike Selzer said.

“In the past seasons we haven’t had the numbers like I said in the weight room over the summertime, but this year we had, like I said, a lot of guys buy in,” added senior Braeden Childress. “We have a really good senior group and that’s really to me what decides winning from losing.”

Big Rapids opens its season at Cadillac on Thursday, Aug. 24. The Cardinals close out the year by hosting Alma on Friday, Oct. 20.
