Central Lake Makes the Move to 8-Man

CENTRAL LAKE – The Central Lake football program is making a change this season as the school moves to the 8-player level.

The move was made necessary by the fact that the Trojans enter the season with just 14 players on the roster. What they lack in quantity, they more than make up for in quality, with many of the players having seen varsity experience.

“It’s great,” junior Grant Papineau said. “You know, I think it’s going to be safer for us. I think we’re going to have a lot of fun with it, and it’s football. I mean it’s still football, I think that’s the biggest thing, is it’s really not that different.”

Central Lake will compete in the Midwest Central Michigan 8-Player Football Conference. The Trojans are joined by Grand Traverse Academy, Hale, Forest Area, Wyoming Tri-unity Christian, Suttons Bay, Atlanta and Onekama.

“Challenging, but at the same time fun and exciting,” coach Rob Heeke said. “It’s kind of a new opportunity to re-invent, and you know, kind of be the mad scientist a little bit if you want to be.”

Central Lake welcomes in Mesick on Friday, Aug. 25.
