Clare Preps to Defend JPC Title
CLARE – The lights came on right at midnight in Clare, as the football program opened its 2017 campaign under the lights from the fourth straight year.
After missing out on the playoffs for the first time in a decade in 2015, the Pioneers rebounded to post an 8-2 record and returned to the postseason last fall.
Gone from last year’s undefeated Jack Pine Conference championship team is all-state quarterback Travis Vida. Determining who Vida’s successor is the biggest question for Clare as it embarks on another season under veteran coach Kelly Luplow.
“New quarterback, but we have a lot of other kids back,” Luplow said. “A lot of good receivers. Linemen, you know, we’ve got some good linemen returning. You know, if we can get a quarterback to get going with us, we’ll be very competitive.”
The Pioneers open their season at Ithaca on Thursday, Aug. 24. Clare then hosts Beal City on Friday, Sept. 1.
