Gaylord St. Mary Gearing Up for Special Season
GAYLORD – The Gaylord St. Mary football program enters 2017 with one of its biggest rosters in recent years.
The increase in participation has seen the school restart its JV program, as the Snowbirds look duplicate last year’s success.
After three straight 3-6 seasons, St. Mary reached the postseason last year for the first time in seven years, eventually dropping a two-point game to Newberry in a Division 8 pre-district contest.
The Snowbirds have spent the entire offseason preparing for what they believe can be a very special fall.
“We’ve been putting in works since the following week after the season ended,” senior Ben Handley said. “We’ve all been really excited to get back out here.”
“We’re changing it up a little bit, because we’ve got a more agile quarterback, so we’re going to try to do a little bit different stuff,” added senior Cal Gilling.
With the offseason preparation, the Snowbirds expect to compete for a Northern Michigan Football League Legacy division title.
“We’re expecting big things,” senior Nicolas Breckow said. “We expect to win the conference, and go for a pretty far run in the playoffs.”
St. Mary opens the season with four consecutive home games, beginning with Hillman on Friday, Aug. 25.
