Marion Seeks First 8-Player Playoff Bid
MARION – The Marion football program begins its third year of 8-man football in a new league.
The Eagles join Big Rapids Crossroads, Brethren, Bear Lake, Mesick, Baldwin and Manistee Catholic Central in the newly-formed West Michigan D League.
“We want to compete for a conference championship,” coach Chad Jenema said. “We are in the West Michigan D Conference this year, which is the first year for us being in that conference. And make the playoffs would be our team goals.”
The Eagles have been on the cusp of making the postseason each of their first two seasons at the 8-player level, going 4-4 and 5-4, respectively, over the last two years.
“We put in quite a bit of work in the offseason, this last season, because we fell short these past two years in 8-man, going to playoffs by one game each year,” junior Erick Carey said. “We put in a lot of work because we really want to make it in and win a game in playoffs this year.”
Marion opens its season by hosting Onekama on Friday, Aug. 25. The Eagles also have non-conference games against Portland St. Patrick and Forest Area.
