Sault Ste. Marie Moving Forward in 2017
SAULT STE. MARIE – A streak of four consecutive winning seasons came to an end last year for the Sault Ste. Marie football team.
After reaching the playoffs in three of the previous four seasons, the Blue Devils went just 2-7 in 2016, with a six-game losing streak in the middle of the season.
Injuries played a big part in last year’s losing season, but coach Scott Menard expects his team to be a “gritty” squad in 2017.
“I think we were pretty disappointed with the way things turned out, so I had a chance to sit down with a lot of the seniors in the offseason and kind of talk about what they didn’t want to happen and what they wanted to see happen,” Menard said. “I think we’ve probably got a clearer focus.”
The Blue Devils will embark on their second season in the Great Northern U.P. Conference, playing the likes of Marquette, Escanaba, Kingsford and Menominee.
“We just got to play tougher and play harder,” senior Jacob Huhtala said. “We kind of gave up in the middle of the season and didn’t feel like the drive was there.”
Sault Ste. Marie opens its season at home against Cheboygan on Friday, Aug. 25.
