Young Mancelona Squad Preps for 2017
MANCELONA – The first year in the Northern Michigan Football Leaders Division was a bumpy one for Mancelona in 2016.
The Ironmen showed promise down the stretch last fall, posting wins in three of the final five games, and are hoping to carry some that momentum over into 2017.
“They’re pretty smart kids, so they picked it up pretty well,” coach Dan Derrer said. “It’s just adjusting to the speed of the game is the biggest thing. But, like I said, they’ve done a good job, and today was a huge benefit for them.”
Participation numbers are low this fall, but there is experience coming back on the offensive and defensive lines, that will give Mancelona a chance to build from the middle.
With the addition of a small sophomore contingent, the Ironmen will be relying on young players to lead them.
“It’s really fun. We’ve got a lot of younger kids,” senior Hunter Kanaziz said. “We’re just kind of, we just like to be the leaders, because we only have four seniors. So, it’s a fun group.”
Mancelona welcomes in Johannesburg-Lewiston on Friday.
