Red Wings Host Annual Training Camp Golf Classic

TRAVERSE CITY – With the Detroit Red Wings training camp set to begin Friday in Traverse City, the organization kicked off its stay in northern Michigan with the team’s 19th annual golf classic.

“Truly one of the most beautiful places in the world, so being up here in this setting, it just makes it for a great, great camp,” coach Jeff Blashill said.

Taking place at the Grand Traverse Resort, this year’s outing benefited a non-profit organization that provides affordable skating programs in the area.

“It’s great to be back up here in Traverse City,” goaltender Jimmy Howard said. “Whenever we come up here, everyone’s so gracious, you know, to help out. And it’s always a pleasure.”

Thursday’s golf outing gave players a unique way of connecting with the Red Wing community in northern Michigan.

“It’s always a fun outing just to meet the fans and the sponsors and all that,” forward Tyler Bertuzzi said. “You know, I know a lot of people love golf. It’s a great offseason sport. To be able to share it and have a tournament like this, it’s kinda cool.”

“You know, it’s one of those events where we get to get closer with our fans,” added Howard. “They get to see a different side of us, a more personal side. It makes for a great time and everyone enjoys themselves out there.”

Conducting their training camp in Traverse City has brought excitement to the Red Wings organization.

It’s always an exciting time of year to be able to get going,” Blashill said. “Obviously we’ll start with a beautiful day it’s supposed to be today, and golf’s always a fun event. So it’s just good. I think all of us had some time during the summer to decompress. I think all of us are kinda built the same where once you get about this time of year, you’re ready to get going with some hockey.

Training camp opens at Centre Ice Arena Friday at 9 a.m.
