TRAVERSE CITY – Traverse City Central announced Thursday the hiring of three new varsity coaches.

Sharon Vreeland has been named the school’s boys and girls varsity bowling coach. Vreeland served as a volunteer coach in recent years and replaces Jim Orr, who recently retired.

“Coach Vreeland has served as an invaluable member of our bowling program in recent seasons and her friendly, approachable nature, and knowledge of the sport will serve our student-athletes and bowling program well,” said Central athletic director Mark Mattson in a statement.

Ruth Oppliger will take over as coach of the girls and boys Nordic ski programs and replaces John Kostrzewa, who plans to remain on the with program as a mentor. A recent graduate of Michigan Tech, Oppliger captained the Huskies in 2016 and 2017 and has competing and Junior and Senior Nationals.

“Coach Oppliger brings collegiate level experience from the ski-rich Copper Country (Hancock) area and she is excited to share her love of the sport with the talented student-athletes in our Nordic ski program,” Mattson said.

Fred Mawson replaces Dave McMellon as Central’s boys golf coach. Mawson previously served as an assistant coach for the school’s girls golf program.

“Fred came to us in the fall for an interview for a girl’ golf assistant coach position, and I predict that he will quickly become ‘a rising star’ as a member of our varsity coaching staff and his connection to the Traverse City Junior Golf board will create a fantastic connection to our youth and coaches,” Mattson said.
