Week 6 of the high school football season saw six area 11-player programs clinch playoff berths and a big come-from-behind by Traverse City Central in Big North Conference play.
By the Numbers
6 – The numbers of area teams that have qualified for the 11-player postseason. Traverse City West, Lake City, Beaverton, Gaylord St. Mary, Boyne City and Traverse City St. Francis all punched their tickets last week.
6 – Area programs that can clinch playoff bids with wins this week. Reed City, Morley Stanwood, McBain, Clare Frankfort and Elk Rapids can reach the postseason with wins.
8 – Consecutive wins by Reed City over rival Chippewa Hills. Leading 28-22 at the half last Friday, the Coyotes (5-1) pulled away in the second half for 58-29 victory.
8.6 – Average points per game allowed by Marion through its first six contests. The Eagles have already won at least a share of a Western Michigan D League title and have posted three shutouts.
14 – Area teams that are still seeking their first win. Big Rapids Crossroads, Grand Traverse Academy, Charlton Heston Academy, Pellston, Shelby, Kingsley, Mancelona, Mio, Kingsley, Pine River, Ogemaw Heights, Hesperia, Fremont and Tri-County are all winless.
28 – Unanswered points scored by Traverse City Central in a 35-28 win over Petoskey on Friday. The Trojans (4-2) trailed 28-7 midway through the third quarter and were down 28-13 after three.
34 – Second-half points scored by Glen Lake in a 48-34 win over rival Frankfort on Friday. The Lakers trailed 27-14 at the half.
102 – Combined points scored in Montabella’s 54-48 win over Coleman on Friday.
