Buckley’s Historic Season Ends in State Semifinals

EAST KENTWOOD – Buckley’s historic season on the pitch came to a conclusion with a 3-1 loss to Kalamazoo Hackett in a Division 4 state semifinal on Wednesday.

Playing in their first state semifinal in program history, the Bears trailed 3-0 at the half.

Denver Cade got Buckley on the board with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.

“We knew we would have to play perfect,” Buckley coach John Vermilya said. “We didn’t get breaks early, it went the other way. But for us, this is an historic season. You know, we’d like to think that the second half we won. We won the second half 1-0. Unfortunately, we lost the first half 3-0, so that’s how it goes. We say the same things, ‘I’m proud of you. I love you. Thank you. Great Season. Hold your heads high.’”

Buckley concludes its season at 20-2-3 after winning its second straight district title and first regional championship.

Kalamazoo Hackett will face Ann Arbor Greenhills for the state championship on Saturday.
