CEDAR SPRINGS – For the first time since 2001, the Ludington boys soccer team will play for a state championship.
The 16th-ranked Orioles erased a 1-0 second-half deficit to secure a 2-1 win over No. 4 Grand Rapids South Christian in a Division 3 state semifinal.
Caleb Schoon and Zach Peterson both scored for Ludington.
“Just an elated feeling, an incredible feeling,” Ludington coach Kris Anderson said. “What a great run its been, so happy for this group of boys. All the effort, all the time they’ve put in, just for this opportunity, so proud for them.”
Ludington will face No. 3 Flint Powers (21-3-1) at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Comstock Park. Flint Powers handed Detroit Country Day a 1-0 loss in a shootout on Wednesday and is defending Division 3 state runner-up.
In addition to the 2001 state title, the Orioles have appeared in two other finals, finishing runner-up in the 1997 Division 3 finals and the 1994 Class B finals.
