Russell Leads Ferris State Past Ouachita Baptist in NCAA Playoffs

BIG RAPIDS – Travis Russell’s 1-yard scamper with under seven minutes remaining in regulation lifted No. 10 Ferris State to a 24-19 win over Ouachita Baptist in an NCAA Division II First Round playoff game on Saturday.

The back-up quarterback, Russell finished the game with 103 yards on 26 carries. Starting signal caller Reggie Bell was 4-of-13 passing for 47 yards and an interception, while rushing the ball 15 times for 96 yards.

Trailing 13-10 midway through the third quarter, Jaleel Canty put the Bulldogs ahead for the first time with a 31-yard fumble recovery. Ferris State would take a 17-16 lead to the fourth quarter before Cole Antley’s 32-yard field goal put Ouachita Baptist up 19-17 with 10:33 remaining.

Ouachita Baptist jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the first quarter and led 13-7 at the half.

Fourth-seeded Ferris State (10-1) will now face top-seeded Fort Hayes (Kan.) State next week in a second-round playoff matchup.
