MHSAA Announces Changes to 2018-19 Season

The Michigan High School Athletic Association announced Monday that schedules for the boys and girls basketball seasons during 2018-19 school year will switch.

As Michigan State’s Breslin Center will be unavailable to host the boys basketball state finals during its traditional weekend, the boys semifinals and finals will be held at the Breslin Center the weekend of March 14-16, 2019.

The girls semifinals and finals will take place at Calvin College’s Van Noord Arena during the weekend of March 21-23, 2019. After previously calling the Breslin Center home, the girls state finals will make the move to Calvin College during the 2017-18 season.

In addition to the change in state finals dates, the boys will begin practice first and will begin playing games the Monday after Thanksgiving, followed by girls games the week after. The postseason for boys basketball also will start a week earlier.

“Although it is not our preference to change schedules of events that continue to run smoothly, switching girls and boys schedules in this way allows us to keep the current tournament format and traditions that help make these two of our most popular finals very school year,” MHSAA Executive Director John Roberts said in a release. “This will keep that boys at the venue most capable of hosting them and the girls at a venue we’re excited to move to this season.”

The MHSAA says the change in schedule will only be for the 2018-19 season.
