MHSAA Announces Changes to State Tournament
The Michigan High School Athletic Association has announced format changes to its baseball state tournament.
Starting with the 2019 state tournament, a super regional will replace the current one-day regional on Saturday and quarterfinal on Tuesday. The super regional will begin with regional semifinal play on the Wednesday following district finals and will conclude with two regional finals at the same site on Saturday. The winners of those two regional finals will then meet that same Saturday in a super regional championship, with the victor moving on the state semifinals in East Lansing the following Thursday or Friday.
The changes to the baseball tournament do not impact softball, which will continue with the one-day regional and quarterfinal play.
The MHSAA says the change to the baseball tournament is to allow schools more opportunities to use their top pitchers in the most meaningful games of the season. The changes were originally proposed by the MHSAA Baseball Committee in May, following the new pitch-count ruled that was mandated this past spring by the National Federation of State High School Associations.
