SAULT STE. MARIE – Sault Ste. Marie senior softball pitcher Maddie Fitzpatrick recently signed her National Letter of Intent with Colorado Northwestern Community College.

Sault Ste. Marie’s Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year last season, Fitzpatrick batted .455 with 50 hits. In the circle, Fitzpatrick was 10-15 with a 4.84 earned run average and 102 strikeouts.

“It’s exciting,” Fitzpatrick said. “I feel that all of the hard work has finally paid off. I was looking for a school in a small town because that’s where I grew up. It’s got a homey feel. It’s a beautiful place.

“And the field is right across the street from the dorm. There’s no excuse for being late to practice.”

With her senior season just months away, Fitzpatrick ranks second in program history in career batting average with a .413 average and is on pace to finish in the top eight in career strikeouts. She also ranks second all-time in single-season hits with 50.

“Maddie set her sights on college softball when she was in middle school and has done the necessary work to get to that level,” said Linda Bouvet, retired Sault Ste. Marie softball coach. “She has played high-level competition on downstate travel teams and put the time in to get better. Her family has been instrumental in helping her succeed.

“The record book speaks volumes about what the Fitzpatrick family has contributed to Sault High softball over the years.”

Fitzpatrick is excited for the prospect of immediate playing time and the possibility of playing a variety of positions.
