TC Central Tops TC West in “Hockey Fights Cancer” Game

TRAVERSE CITY – Powered by a Charlie Douglass hat trick, Traverse City Central skated to a 4-2 win over rival Traverse City West in the first “Hockey Fights Cancer” game on Wednesday.

The Trojans (4-3, 3-0) took a 2-1 lead to the second period on goals from Charlie Douglass.

“It’s a great feeling,” Douglass said. “It’s even better, I got some great passes from my linemate Noah (Kendra). The last one was really nice to have, icing the game, just against a rival, too. Get the Big North points, that’s huge.”

West’s Evan Wilson tied the game at 2-2 before the second intermission.

Noah Kendra also scored for the Trojans.

Wednesday’s game raised $13,000 for the Van Andel Institute’s cancer research program.

“It’s a big thing for a number of different reasons, and I just told the kids that I was really proud of them for the way they handled the whole night,” Central coach Chris Givens said.

Central is back on the ice next Friday, when it travels to Alpena, while West (2-2-2, 2-1-1) opens the Scott Miller Memorial Cup against the Bay Reps on Thursday, Dec. 28.
