Tigers Trade Kinsler to Angels
The Detroit Tigers made their first major offseason move on Wednesday by trading second baseman Ian Kinsler to the Los Angeles Angels for a pair of minor league prospects.
Detroit received center fielder Troy Montgomery, 23, and 18-year-old right-hander Wilkel Hernandez in the deal. Montgomery split his 2017 season between three teams across Class A and Double-A levels, batting 2.71 with 101 hits, eight home runs and 38 RBIs. Hernandez pitched in the Arizona and Pioneer Rookie-level leagues in 2017, going 4-1 with a 2.61 earned run average and 44 strikeouts.
Kinsler, 35, was acquired by Detroit from the Texas Rangers in November 2013, making the All-Star game in 2014 and winning a Gold Glove in 2016. Kinsler is coming off a career-worst season in 2017, when he batted .236 with 22 home runs and 52 RBIs.
