West’s Hayes, Lyon Sign NLIs
TRAVERSE CITY – Traverse City West senior Ryan Hayes made it official on Wednesday by signing his National Letter of Intent with the University of Michigan football program.
A two-time All-State honoree and 2017 Associated Press Division 1-2 First Team Lineman, Hayes appeared at tight end, on the defensive line and handled the punting duties for West.
The 6-foot-7, 262-pounder helped lead the Titans to a 9-2 record in 2017 and a Big North Conference championship with an undefeated 5-0 season. As a senior, Hayes tallied 26 tackles, six tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks, while recording 24 catches for 515 yards and five touchdowns.

“I’m just really excited, relieved,” Hayes said. “I mean, I know where I’m going, just really excited to get down there. I just really loved everything about it when I took my visits.”
ESPN ranked Hayes as the 29th best offensive tackle in the country and 16th in Michigan.
Hayes was joined on Wednesday by fellow senior Mary Lyon, who signed her National Letter of Intent with Michigan Tech’s women’s cross country program.
“I’m feeling really excited,” Lyon said. “I’ve loved running cross country since I was in sixth grade. So to be able to do it at the next level, I can’t wait. The ability to run and cross-country ski up there definitely swayed me as well.”
Lyon led the Titans to a ninth-place finish at the 2017 MHSAA Division I Lower Peninsula state finals, and joins a program that finished third at the 2017 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships.
