Edson: Win Your Super Bowl Bet Before The Game Begins
One of my best friends – I’ll call him Tom – spends the winters in Las Vegas, where it is legal to bet on the Super Bowl.
I’m sure he has already put his money down on the one Super Bowl bet that is a sure thing to win.
This bet has nothing to do with the New England Patriots being favored to win by five points over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Nor does it apply to the over/under, which is the combined points for both teams. That number sits at 48.
No, the best bet for this year’s Super Bowl, according to Tom, happens before the game even starts.
That’s when the musical performer Pink steps to the microphone to perform the National Anthem.
The over/under for the length of time it will take her to sing the song is one minute, 59 seconds or two minutes, depending on where you place your bet.
Most shrewd bettors are putting money that Pink will take longer than two minutes to sing the anthem. That’s because she’s a performer and a singer. Contrast that to other, less famous anthem singers who make the song about the words, and not themselves.
So the Vegas sharks are putting heavy money on “Over Two Minutes.”
Four of the last five Super Bowl National Anthems have gone over two minutes, so this one looks like a shoo-in.
Just think, if you were out in Vegas this week and put money on the “anthem over” you could have money in your pocket before the game begins.
Actually, if you’ve been out to Las Vegas for the Super Bowl, most of the fun is in what is called prop betting. That means, betting on everything related to the game.
Here are some of the interesting prop bets on this year’s Super Bowl:
* Coin toss – heads or tails.
* Winner of the coin toss.
* Tom Brady Passing Yards – 294.5 yards.
* Which team scores the first touchdown.
* If a player will kneel during the National Anthem.
* Justin Timberlake’s first halftime song.
* If the first TV ad during the game will include an animal.
* If the word “dilly” will be used more than 12 times during the Bud Lite ads.
* And, my favorite, which color of liquid will be dumped on the winning coach.
There are many more “prop bets” that Las Vegas is putting out there this week. They are done just to pump more interest into the game.
But for my friend Tom’s money, he’s going to walk into his favorite Las Vegas casino this week and put some green (money) down on Pink. He thinks she’ll exceed two minutes.
Just for fun, start your watches when she starts the anthem and see if he wins or loses.
