TC Central Announces Coaching Hires

TRAVERSE CITY – Traverse City Central announced a pair of new varsity head coaching hires on Thursday.

Former Glen Lake varsity girls soccer head coach and assistant boys soccer coach Andy Smith will take over the Central varsity girls program, while Liberty Provost will head up the new boys varsity co-op lacrosse team.

Smith spent five seasons (2012-2017) with the Glen Lake girls program and was an assistant with the boys in 2016. Smith has served as a college summer camp instructor at Ferris State and Grand Valley State and coached the North Storm U98 girls team from 2013-2016. He also ran summer camps for TBAYS and is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

“Coach Smith has extensive coaching experience from the youth to the high school levels and understands how to build a strong team,” Central athletic director Mark Mattson said in a release. “I have previously worked with Andy and I am confident that his success as a high school coach in the area, along with his connections with colleges throughout the state, will benefit our student athletes and the program.”

After coaching the TC club lacrosse team since 2007, Provost will serve as head coach of Traverse City United’s inaugural MHSAA campaign. A co-op program consisting of players from Traverse City Central and Traverse City West, Traverse City United will compete as a co-op for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons.

“Coach Provost is uniquely qualified to lead the Traverse City United team, having coached a lacrosse co-op team in Traverse City before,” Mattson said. “His more than a decade of lacrosse coaching experience and understanding of how to bring a team together make him a great fit to help this new program grow.”
