Chippewa Hills Knocks off Dowagiac, Advances to State Semis
KALAMAZOO – For the fourth consecutive year, the Chippewa Hills wrestling team is headed back to the Division 3 state semifinals.
Appearing in its seventh straight quarterfinal, the third-seeded Warriors (24-0) handed six-seed Dowagiac a 47-21 loss at Kalamazoo’s Wings Event Center on Friday.
Jaycob Sharp (160), Robert Granberry (171), Chayton Wiggins (189), Billy Koepf (215), Andrew Vinton (285), Daylin Wittig (103), Korante Lowrey (135), Caleb Fate (140), Brandon Russell (145) and Austin Young (152) all posted wins for the Warriors on Friday.
“Our guys are going to battle,” Chippewa Hills coach Nate Ethridge said. “We’re battle-tested. We’ve been here before. It’s not our first time. Our seniors came up big at the end. We had two seniors that came through both of the falls even after we had that run where we took a couple losses. They did a great job. So, we’re in a position that we’re still competing for a state title and there’s only four teams in our division that get to do that, so we’re excited.”
Chippewa Hills will face second-seed and defending state champion Richmond (20-5) at noon Saturday. Richmond handed Alma a 57-18 loss in another quarterfinal on Friday.
