Fremont Back in Title Contention

FREMONT – After posting back-to-back six-win seasons two years ago, the Fremont boys basketball program is turning the page and seeing the success that the Packers have come to expect on the hardwood.

Fremont (13-4) is currently tied atop the Central State Activities Association Gold division standings with Big Rapids at 10-3 in league play. The Cardinals hold the tiebreaker over the Packers.

“We’ve won eight districts since the year 2000 when I started coaching and we’ve won 15 championships overall. That’s a big goal of these kids is to, well, one’s to win conference,” Fremont coach Peter Zerfas said. “We’re not out of it, so that’s why we talk about just take it one game at a time. And then districts is a really big goal of ours also.”

Fremont has already matched last year’s win total and is setting its sights on winning a Class B district title. The Packers will take on district host Tri County in a pre-district on Monday, March 5.

“I’m mostly looking forward to the last few games because they’re the big games. And then the postseason, that will be a lot of fun to play in,” Fremont junior Logan Karnemaat said.

Fremont closes out its conference season at home against Tri County on Friday. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
