Onaway Falls to Hudson in D4 Quarterfinals

KALAMAZOO – A historic season for the Onaway wrestling program came to a close Friday afternoon at Kalamazoo’s Wings Event Center.

Making its first appearance in a Division 4 state quarterfinal, Onaway fell 75-3 to defending state champion and top-seed Hudson.

Hudson (18-5) recorded 10 wins by fall.

Onaway’s Brendan Fenstermaker posted a 6-4 decision over Kameron Betzer in the final bout of the day at 140 pounds.

“We knew that we were fighting a pretty steep battle, and we were okay with that,” Onaway coach Mark Grant said. “It is what it is, and they learned a valuable lesson here, and now it’s what we do with it that matters. As far as I’m concerned, there was a little bit of a pride factor in being able to come down and wrestle the team that everybody wants to beat, everybody needs to beat to be the best, you know.”

Along the postseason path, the Cardinals picked up wins over Rogers City (59-24) and Charlevoix (60-24) in distract action and St. Ignace (48-30) and Ishpeming Westwood (42-36) in the regional round.

Onaway ends its season at 18-7.
