Petoskey’s Paquette Named MHSAA Scholar-Athlete Award Winner

PETOSKEY – The Michigan High School Athletic Association has named Petoskey senior David Paquette as a recipient of its 2017-18 Scholar-Athlete Award program.

Paquette is one of 20 student-athletes from Class A and B schools to receive scholarships.

Presented by Farm Bureau Insurance, 32 individuals from Class A-D schools will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

Scholarships are awarded to 12 student-athletes from Class A, eight from Class B, six from Class C and four from Class D.

A four-year member of Petoskey’s varsity ski program, Paquette has led the Northmen to three straight MHSAA Division 2 state championships. Paquette is also a member of the school’s soccer team, having moved up to the varsity program as a sophomore. He led the soccer program to three district titles and earned multiple all-state honors in both sports.

Paquette is a member of the National Honor Society as well as Petoskey’s marching and steel drum band. He has participated on the Quiz Bowl team Substance Abuse Free Environment of Northern Michigan and Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America mid-year Youth Leadership Training Conference.

He will attend either University of Michigan or Northwestern University and study computer science and economics.

To be eligible for the scholarship, student-athletes must have a grade point average of 3.50 and have previously won a varsity letter in at least one sport that has an MHSAA sponsored postseason tournament. Scholarship recipients will be announced in February, with winners being recognized during halftime of the Class C boys basketball final on March 24.
