Pine River Edges Mendon, Advances to State Semis
KALAMAZOO – For the third straight year, the Pine River wrestling program has punched its ticket to a Division 4 state semifinal.
Facing four-seed Mendon (30-2) in a quarterfinal at Kalamazoo’s Wings Event Friday, the Bucks pulled off a 29-28 win.
Andrew Park (152), Brock Nelson (160), Malachi Holmes (171), Tim Rzor (215), Caleb Nolf (103), Dylan Stephens (112), Jordan Koetje (125) and Tyler Signor (130) all picked up wins for Pine River.
“We questioned a little bit of what we had to do to win,” Pine River coach Tim Jones said. “All of the hard work, and the toughness that the kids have been going through over the last two weeks, it just really came through in those two matches towards the end. But we really had to have some step-up matches at the end. You know, we’ll try to take this toughness, and go on tomorrow, and maybe we can find ourselves in the final tomorrow evening.”
Pine River (30-6) will now face defending state champion and top seed Hudson (18-5) in a state semifinal at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Hudson handed Onaway a 75-3 loss in Friday’s earlier quarterfinal.
