Sanford Meridian Eyes First Regional Title

SANFORD – Fresh off winning its third district championship since 2015, the Sanford Meridian wrestling program is now setting its sights on claiming its first regional title.

Sanford Meridian takes part in a four-team regional at Ogemaw Heights on Wednesday. The Mustangs will face Caro in a semifinal, with the winner taking on either Ogemaw Heights or third-ranked Chippewa Hills.

“We were rolling,” co-coach Corey Robinson said. “We’ve never won tournaments under our regime. We won two this year. We were hoping for a conference-district. Conference, we ended up falling to third. Our team started to get beat up these past couple weeks.”

The Mustangs claimed their second straight district title on Wednesday, picking up narrow wins over Shepherd (41-37) and Midland Bullock Creek (39-32).

“Winning districts is kind of … it’s our standard right now,” co-coach Corey Cordero said. “Like last year, I said brick-by-brick, we’re building up and getting three out of four with this senior class, they really left their legacy.”
