Sault Ste. Marie’s Kalchik Wins MHSAA Scholar-Athlete Award

SAULT STE. MARIE – The Michigan High School Athletic Association has named Sault Ste. Marie senior Mackenzie Kalchik as a recipient of its 2017-18 Scholar-Athlete Award program.

Kalchik is one of 20 student-athletes from Class A and B schools to receive scholarships.

Presented by Farm Bureau Insurance, 32 individuals from Class A-D schools will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

Scholarships are awarded to 12 student-athletes from Class A, eight from Class B, six from Class C and four from Class D.

A four-year member of the school’s varsity basketball, cross country and soccer programs, Kalchik has earned numerous all-conference honors across the three sports and will participate on Sault Ste. Marie’s track and field program for the first time this spring.

Kalchik captained the basketball, cross country and soccer teams and earned academic All-State honors in soccer. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Students United and will attend Lake Superior State in the fall, studying pre-medical.

To be eligible for the scholarship, student-athletes must have a grade point average of 3.50 and have previously won a varsity letter in at least one sport that has an MHSAA sponsored postseason tournament. Scholarship recipients will be announced in February, with winners being recognized during halftime of the Class C boys basketball final on March 24.
