TC Central Celebrates 40 Years
TRAVERSE CITY – The Traverse City Central hockey team reached a milestone this year, one that was four decades in the making.
This season, the Trojans are celebrating their 40th year as a high school hockey program, something that the players and coaches are excited to be able to experience.
“Forty years, you know a lot has happened in that time,” Head Coach Chris Givens said. “You know, we’ve had our share of success. I’ve been a part of Trojan hockey for over half of my life, so obviously this is something that I take pretty seriously.”
Senior Noah Kendra is also excited about the milestone, and believes Givens is a large part of the program’s success over the years.
“I think it’s a pretty big deal because it’s been around a long time and it’s just a lot of tradition behind the whole program so it’s fun to be a part of,” he said. ”I mean, it’s been successful for many years and I think that what coach has works … so it’s good to stick to that.”
Throughout the program’s 40 years, the Trojans have won 13 conference championships, five regional championship and one state championship.
“It’s pretty cool, it’s a big milestone, 40 years. It really showcases a lot of our success and a lot of our history. It’s pretty cool to be a part of,” senior Kyle Knowles said. “Great team, great program, you know, coaches have been doing the same stuff for many years and a lot of success comes with that.”
To celebrate the program, the Trojans are holding an anniversary event at the upcoming game against Gaylord. The event will feature alumni from the very first team back in 1977 in addition to more alums from over the years.
“We’ve got guys coming from the very first Trojan team in 1977. You know a lot of those guys kind of set the foundation for us on that first team,” Givens said. “We’re very excited for the reception, I know there’s going to be quite a few alumni in town for that. It’ll be fun to see a lot of those guys that I haven’t seen in a long time and I’m sure there are going to be some stories from the old days, which will be a lot of fun too.”
The Trojans will hold their 40th anniversary celebration game Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. against Gaylord at Howe Arena. There will be a reception held at Blue Tractor following the game.
