Elk Rapids Duo Signs NLIs

ELK RAPIDS – Elk Rapids senior soccer players Nicole Hayes and Heather Brothers signed their National Letters of Intent with the University of South Carolina Aiken and Northwood University, respectively, on Monday.

A three-time all-conference, all-district and all-region honoree, Hayes, a forward, has twice been named a Division 4 All-State honoree. In three seasons at Elk Rapids, Hayes has posted 75 goals and 45 assists and led the Vardar United FC Girls Premier Soccer Club to a runner-up finish at the 2017 USA Cup in Minnesota.

“I am thankful I am able to continue playing soccer at a great university like USCA,” Hayes said. “I fell in love with the campus, and coach (Hillary) George is a genuine caring individual in addition being an excellent soccer coach. I have been fortunate to have been coached by two of the best coaches in northern Michigan in coach (Andrea) Krakow and coach (Ed) Fantozzi. I look forward to playing my final year of high school with my teammates.”

Hayes joins an NCAA Division II USC Aiken team that went 4-13 in 2017.

A three-year varsity letterwinner, Brothers has been named all-district each of her first three seasons and earned All-Lake Michigan Conference honors in 2016 and 2017. Brothers also plays with Vardar United FC Girls Premier.

Brothers has accepted an athletic and academic scholarship to Northwood’s business school. She joins a Northwood program that went 4-11-1 in 2017.
