Ferris State Softball Falls Twice to Northwood
BIG RAPIDS – The Ferris State softball team suffered a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference losses to visiting Northwood on Friday.
Northwood (14-13, 2-8) opened the day with a 5-2 win and closed out the series with a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the third in the opener, the Timberwolves plated four runs in to take control of the game.
Sarah Meredith led the way at the plate for the Bulldogs, going 2-for-3, while starter Sam Bates went 1-for-3 with a solo home run. Emily Smith also went 1-for-3 with a triple and a run scored.
Bates allowed five earned runs on nine hits while striking out four over seven innings.
Logan Fleming put Ferris State ahead early in the nightcap with an RBI double in the top of the first. Northwood would tie the game in the fifth on a fielding error and went ahead in the top of the seventh on an Abby Joseph RBI single.
Emily Reed went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Bulldogs.
Katie Ross allowed two earned runs on just two hits while striking out five and walking 10 over seven innings.
Ferris State (7-17, 1-7) returns to the road Saturday for a doubleheader at Saginaw Valley State.
