Glen Lake Punches Ticket to Class C Title Game

EAST LANSING – For the first time since 1996, the Glen Lake boys basketball program will compete for a state championship.

Facing No. 1 Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central in a Class C state semifinal at the Breslin Center on Thursday, fifth-ranked Glen Lake secured a 62-56 victory behind a game-high 23 points from Xander Okerlund.

Glen Lake (24-2) went to the bench for just two minutes in Thursday’s win, as Okerlund, Cade Peterson and Reece Hazelton were the only three Lakers to reach the scoring column. Peterson and Hazelton posted 20 and 19 points, respectively, with Hazelton shooting 5-of-8 from 3-point range. As a team, the Lakers were 10-of-22 from long range and 14-of-16 from the charity stripe.

“We were looking at this just to be the best team we could be,” Glen Lake coach Rich Ruelas said. “That’s what we’ve done all year. This was just another example. They don’t look at the other team. They look at Glen Lake and what we can do to be better.”

The Lakers held a 14-11 lead after one quarter and led by as much as 12 in the second quarter before the Falcons ended the first half on a 13-4 run to cut the deficit to 34-30. Glen Lake trailed just twice in the opening minutes.

“We expected coming into the game that they were going to make their runs,” Peterson said. “We were going to make ours. And what I love about this team is just that we bounce back no matter what. Even after our two losses to a really good Buckley team, we come back and we just keep on going. It doesn’t matter who we’re playing. We’re going to give it our all.”

Christopher Haut led St. Mary (25-1) with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Hunter Kegley tallied 13 points.

Winners of the 1959 and 1977 Class D titles, the Lakers will go for their third state championship on Saturday.

Glen Lake will face Detroit Edison Public School Academy (16-10) for the state title at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The Pioneers held off a late Grand Rapids Covenant Christian rally for a 55-43 win in Thursday’s earlier semifinal.
