Bronkema, Hankins Honored by NABC

Ferris State junior center and Charlevoix native Zach Hankins and head coach and McBain native Andy Bronkema were recognized at the National Association of Basketball Coaches awards banquet Sunday evening in San Antonio.

Honored as the NABC Division II National Coach of the Year, Bronkema recently led Ferris State to the school’s first NCAA Division II national championship and a 38-1 record, tying Winona State (Minn.) for most wins in a single season.

Under Bronkema this winter, Ferris State won its second straight Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title, fourth consecutive GLIAC tournament championship and an NCAA Division II Midwest Region title.

In five seasons as head coach of the Bulldogs, Bronkema has a 123-41 overall record.

In addition to NABC National Coach of the Year honors, Bronkema was also named Basketball Times National Coach of the Year, GLIAC Conference Coach of the Year and NABC Midwest Region Coach of Year.

At 6-10, Hankins averaged 15.1 points, 9.7 points and 3.3 blocks per game.
