Experienced, Talented Rudyard Ready for 2018

RUDYARD – The Rudyard baseball program is back on the diamond with an experienced roster returning from last year’s Division 4 state quarterfinalist squad.

Third-year coach Jim Smith welcomes back six seniors and an even larger junior class that propelled the Bulldogs to district and regional championships before falling to Gaylord St. Mary in the quarterfinals a year ago.

Ranked 15th in the latest Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association Division 4 poll, Rudyard opened its season last weekend by splitting a doubleheader header at Leslie on Friday and going 1-1 at tournament at Hanover-Horton with a win over Pittsford on Saturday.

With senior ace and Finlandia commit James Burton on the mound and a talented group of juniors, the Bulldogs are once again expected to make a lengthy postseason run.

“James Burton was our workhorse last year off the mound. He’s a senior,” Smith said. “Then the four freshmen that have on varsity for their third year now.

“We’re hoping and expecting big seasons and leadership out of them because this is their third year on varsity so they quite a bit of experience.”

Rudyard is scheduled to travel to Mio for a tournament on Saturday.
