Coaches’ Profile: Petoskey’s Dennis Starkey

PETOSKEY – Longtime Petoskey boys basketball coach and Michigan Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame member Dennis Starkey recently announced his retirement after 36 years of coaching.

Starkey began his career at Boyne City in 1983 before moving on to Vanderbilt from 1984-86. He then accepted the position at Petoskey in 1987.

In 32 years at Petoskey, Starkey amassed a 515-211 overall record, 17 district and 14 Big North Conference championships and Class B state semifinals appearances in 1997 and 1998.

With a 553-260 overall record in 36 years, Starkey ranks 16th on the all-time wins list and is one of 25 coaches to reach 500 or more wins.

In Starkey’s final season, the Northmen went 19-3, winning the Big North.
