New Era Begins For TC Central Girls Tennis
TRAVERSE CITY – It’s a new era for the Traverse City Central Girls’ Tennis team.
The Trojan’s long-time coach, Larry Nykerk, retired in October of 2017 after half a century of coaching both boys and girls tennis.
The school appointed his assistant coach, Shane Dilloway, to the head coaching position.
“It’s tough to fill his shoes because he gives all his time, all his energy all year long to this program. So, it’s really tough to take on that same amount of time and energy because the girls deserve it, the program deserves it too,” said Dilloway.
This year, the team returns 6 of their players, but have also added six newcomers.
“Everyone is doing really well and we’re still fighting strong and we’re just as good as ever,” said senior captain Autumn Roberts.
Despite the change in coaching staff and new players, the girls and Coach Dilloway are hoping to keep the winning tradition alive and to get better every day.
“Big motivators every year are doing well at conference, doing well at regionals, making it back to the state finals, we’ve been there with the girls team the last 38 years so maintaining that consistent strong team and making sure that the girls are still progressing and learning what they need to during practice and putting that into match play,” said Dilloway.
TC Central’s next match is Tuesday, May 8, against Petoskey for conference play.
