Beal City Shuts Down Unionville-Sebewaing for D4 State Title

EAST LANSING – An eight-run sixth inning propelled Beal City to its first MHSAA Division 4 state championship victory since 2010.

Making its first appearance in a state title game since back-to-back appearances in 2013 and 2014, Beal City recorded a 10-0 (six innings) victory over Unionville-Sebewaing at Michigan State Saturday.

Scoreless through 3 1/2 innings, Beal City (23-8) stretched runs across the plate in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 2-0 lead to the sixth.

Saturday’s win marked Beal City’s fourth state championship and first under second-year coach Steve Pickens.

Senior ace Brett Upton carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, tossing a gem and allowing one hit while striking out eight over six innings of work.


Colby Berryhill led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI while Keegan Haynes was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Aaron Schafer also drove in two runs while teammate Lucas Schumacher was 3-for-3 with two runs.

Devin Riskey allowed eight runs on 10 hits while striking out four over five innings in the loss.

Unionville-Sebewaing (22-16) was appearing in its first state title game.

Beal City graduates eight players and is set to return seven next spring.
