Beal City Tops Gaylord St. Mary, Advances to D4 Title Game

EAST LANSING – After a four-year absence, Beal City is back in the MHSAA Division 4 title game.

Facing Gaylord St. Mary in a state semifinal Friday at Michigan State, the Aggies scattered six runs across the opening two innings to secure a 7-3 win.

Long a state power, Beal City has three state championships to its credit, winning the 1993 Class D title and 2009 and 2010 Division 4 championships. The Aggies also finished runner-up in 2013 and 2014.

Trailing 6-0 through four innings, St. Mary’s bats came alive in the top of the fifth as the Snowbirds cut the lead in half.

Beal City (22-8) would add an insurance in the bottom of the fifth.

Keegan Haynes allowed three earned runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out four to earn the win. Haynes helped his cause by going 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored.

Ryan Schafer also went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Cameron Lynch was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Pitching in his final game, Drew Long surrendered seven earned runs on 10 hits while fanning four and walking three in six games for the loss.

Joseph Moeggenberg went 2-for-2 with an RBI and run for St. Mary.

With the loss, St. Mary ends its season at 26-6. Friday’s game marked the third straight semifinal appearance for the Snowbirds.

St. Mary graduates just two seniors and is set to return 11, including nine rising juniors.

Beal City will face either Unionville-Sebewaing Area or St. Joseph Michigan Catholic in the title game. The Aggies faced St. Joseph in the 2010 final.

First pitch Saturday is slated for 2:30 p.m.
