Berger Returns For Fifth Year Of Youth Camp

NEWAYGO – Former NFL offensive lineman and alum of Newaygo High School, Joe Berger, returned to his hometown for his annual Joe Berger Youth Football Camp.

The free event was held Tuesday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the high school’s practice field.

“It’s great to be home. You know, Newaygo has always been home we try to get here as much as we can, even throughout my career. And to be here, like you said, it just feels like home,” said Berger.

The camp is football themed, but there were other activities for the kindergarten-8th grade kids, like tag, duck-duck-goose, and different types of races.

The main goal for the day is to get kids in the community out and active.

“This is important to the community because it gets the kids out, it brings them together. It shows kids there’s more than video games, more than sitting in the house. It’s an enjoyable day for all the kids to get out,” said camp director Kevin Harkness.

Besides getting out and playing today, the kids also got to go home with t-shirts, autographed pictures of Berger, and other prizes.
