Big Rapids Finishes Runner-up in Division 3

EAST LANSING – For the second straight year, the Big Rapids boys golf program finished runner-up at the MHSAA Lower Peninsula Division 3 state finals.

Tied with Hanover-Horton after the opening day of competition, the Cardinals lost on a fifth-player tiebreaker after finishing with a 651. Senior Pierce Morrissey was the individual medalist after shooting a 147 over the two-day event.

Shepherd came home in seventh place, while Charlevoix (704) and Elk Rapids (718) finished in 10th and 13th.

Houghton Lake’s Brock Decker secured a third-place overall finish, ending up five strokes behind Morrissey, while Big Rapids’ Owen Seay tied for seventh, nine strokes behind his teammate.

Suttons Bay finished in sixth place at the Division 4 meet at MSU’s Forest Akers East. The Norsemen finished with a 649, with Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart (673) and Frankfort (674) in eighth and ninth. Leland also finished in 10th after recording a 680. Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian won with a 595.

Suttons Bay senior Thomas Hursey finished second overall with a 141, three stroke behind medalist Erik Fahlen.

At the Division 1 finals at Grand Valley State’s The Meadows, Traverse City West finished in 16th, carding a 347 on Saturday after opening Friday with a 358.
