Big Rapids Tied for 1st at D3 Finals

EAST LANSING – The Big Rapids boys golf team finds itself tied atop the MHSAA Division 3 state finals standings after the first day of competition Friday.

Competing at Michigan State’s Forest Akers West, the Cardinals fired a 321, tying Hanover-Horton while leading third-place Grand Rapids West Catholic by six strokes.

Pierce Morrissey recorded a 70 to top the leaderboard while teammate Owen Seay is tied for second with a 74.

After a runner-up finish a year ago, Big Rapids is eyeing its first state title since 2008.

Shepherd currently sits in eighth place (349), while Charlevoix (359) and Elk Rapids (366) are in 13th and 15th place.

Competing as an individual, Houghton Lake’s Brock Decker is in fifth place overall after carding a 75, while Ludington’s Evan McKinley (78) and Clare’s JJ Gross (80) are in 13th and 15th.

Suttons Bay is tied with Kalamazoo Christian for fourth place at the Division 4 final at Michigan State’s Forest Akers East. Both teams shot a 315 on Friday and trail leader Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian by 16 strokes.

Suttons Bay’s Thomas Hursey carded a 67 to lead all players, while Harbor Springs’ Cole Ketterer is in ninth after shooting a 74.

Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart (329) is in eighth, with Frankfort (334) and Leland (336) in ninth and 10th.

At the Division 2 meet at Battle Creek’s Bedford Valley, Gaylord is tied for sixth with Richland Gull Lake after shooting a 308. Pontiac Notre Dame Prep leads with a 300.

Traverse City West is sitting in 16th place at the Division 1 meet at Grand Valley State’s The Meadows. The Titans shot a 358 on Friday, with Murphy Kehoe in 10th place overall after shooting a 75.
